Bawumia to visit Upper East flood victims today

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will later today, Sunday, visit displaced residents and mourn with bereaved families who lost their relatives and properties to recent torrential rains in the Upper East Region.

Over 26,000 people are reported to have been displaced with about 19 people injured.

More than 20 people have also died as a result of flooding-related incidents including drowning and electrocution.

Even though some displaced residents of the disaster have started receiving relief items from NADMO, Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Frank Fuseini Adongo, tells Citi News, the Vice President’s visit is to reassure the affected people of the government’s support and concern about their plight.

“The purpose of his coming is to visit the dam to look at how the flooding has devasted parts of the dam especially the main canal so that we will see how we can fix it before the next rain so that we don’t lose the water in the reservoir.”

“We will also go to Mayero where he is going to empathize with the flood victims. We decided to bring them together because of the way they are so scattered. They are scattered in a way that it may not be easy to visit every individual in every location.”

Builsa North, Builsa South, and Kassena Nankana Municipal were among the worst affected areas.

The Upper East Regional NADMO Director Jerry Asomani had earlier  entreated the general public to ensure their safety during heavy downpour following the developments in the region.
