Video: Adabraka Sahara flooded after heavy downpour

Residents of Adabraka Sahara were on Thursday morning forced to move out of their home after the area flooded due to a heavy downpour.

Speaking to Adom News, some residents attributed the flood to a blockage in the bed linking the Odaw river into the Korle Lagoon.

According to some residents, settlers who built houses along the drain dug heaps of sand across the river, hence blocked the passage of rainwater.

Others also claimed contractors dumped sawdust into the river which chocked the gutters, leading to the flood.

“This flood was not caused by rubbish in the gutters because we clean-up every Saturday. The Korle Lagoon is the major problem because the water cannot flow freely due to the heap of sand as sawdust redirects the flow of water into our homes.

“If we eject the Kokomba residents who have built along the waterways, I believe flooding issues will be resolved.

“It floods all the time but today’s is exceptional; I was not able to move my car so I towed it. We appeal to the government all the time but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,” a resident shared his frustration.

Assembly member for the area, Nobel Kena said he had to support some of the affected residents after efforts to bring officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation on board failed.
