I have, and still, maintain a strong opinion and position that the Voters Register must be changed. The previous call for a New Register was initiated by Political Parties, Civil Society Groups, Pressure Groups and Stakeholders in our elections, however, the EC had contrary viewpoints and stood firm to defend its position …. granted
Today’s calls for New Voters register is purely initiated by the Electoral Commission, supported by the majority of Ghanaians, including 13 Registered Political Parties. This is a call by the EC I support wholeheartedly, and will gladly join any movement that seeks to make this happen
Of course, when I get on board a flight from Accra to London and the pilot announces a technical challenge on the plane and insists, we disembark to be emplaned on another plane, I won’t insist the pilot flies us on the same plane with the detected technical challenge, my reasoning could be questioned.
The EC, managing elections as an independent constitutionally mandated body says the Register is problematic. I won’t insist the EC goes ahead with a problematic register to conduct an Election crucial as the 2020 General Elections.
Let us not delude ourselves also into thinking a Register that successfully conducts a District Level Assembly election can automatically be used for a general Presidential and Parliamentary elections, the stakes are not same, the preparations are not the same and the interest these two elections generate are significantly different from Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
This young fledgling democracy like ours must ensure that the integrity and credibility of its election processes are never undermined. A reliable and trustworthy Voters Register is a big step on the journey to consolidate our democracy. Let us rally behind the EC as it embarks on the process of developing a Voters Register which complements the gains achieved during our current democratic dispensation.
Good day, Ghana, a new Voters Register is more than Necessary now, we need it!!!
