Electorates ‘swerve’ district assembly elections

Ongoing district elections record low turnouts

It is the right of every Ghanaian to cast his or her votes during an election, be it by-elections, district or even general elections but it seems Ghanaians are getting fed up with voting people into office for whatever reasons already.

Touring some electoral areas in Dzorwulu, a subset of Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, voting turnout was extremely low.

Speaking to the presiding officer of Dzorwulu South Center A, Thomas Donkor, he confirmed to Ghanaweb that “the turn out is very low…so far, we have about 30. It’s not encouraging but we just hope that…they will come”.

Explaining the reason for the low turnout in the electoral area, he claimed “people are saying that they don’t see the importance of the assembly and the unit committee so they don’t see the reason why they should abandon their work or come and queue to vote for people who are not doing anything for them”.

He called on all eligible voters to come out and vote so that they can hold the assemblyman accountable when things go wrong in the area.

“The assemblymen gave a lot of promises so they should come out and vote so they can hold them accountable to what they promised”, he encouraged electorates.

Other presiding officers who spoke to GhanaWeb were of the view that the timing was bad in that, voting on a weekday creates an inconvenience for a lot of workers.

Out of 644 voters expected to cast their votes at King of Kings school, only 33 showed up at the time of this report.

At Dzorwulu Bethany Methodist polling station, only 44 turned up to vote out of the 562 expected.

Presiding officer for Dzorwulu JHS B, Ransford Nana Addo Asare, also noted that out of 651 electorates expected to cast their votes, only 50 have exercised their franchise.

However, officers are looking forward to voters showing up at various centers to vote before 5pm.
