A group of public sector workers who called themselves “coalition of Ningo Prampram Public Sector workers (CNPPSW)” is hereby calling on H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a matter of urgency to release the Saglemi Affordable Housing Units to workers for occupancy.
According to the coalition, Saglemi Affordable Housing Units was awarded to OAS Ghana Ltd by the then government (NDC) to construct 5000 units. It is rather unfortunate that, the project has been terminated for more than two years now leaving the housing units in a deplorable state. Per the information available,it shows that the Government, completed about 600 units of the building but failed to continue work.
The coalition, in a statement signed by Mr. Joseph N. K. Teye – Convener and Mr. Peter Anderson the Public Relations Manager is calling for full completion of the project.
Find attached, the full statement by the coalition.
*SAGLEMI HOUSING UNITS ROTTEN WHILE PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS STRUGGLE FOR ACCOMMODATION -COALITION OF NINGO-PRAMPRAM PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS (CNPPSW)*
Coalition of Ningo Prampram Public Sector workers (CNPPSW) is calling
on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a matter of urgency to
release the Saglemi Affordable Housing Units to workers for occupancy.
Saglemi Affordable Housing Units was awarded to OAS Ghana Ltd by the
then government (NDC) to construct 5000 units. The project has been
terminated for more than two years now leaving the housing units in a
deplorable state.
Information gathered by the group, coalition of Ningo Prampram Public
Sector workers (CNPPSW) clearly indicate that about 600 units have been
completed. We won’t say it is hypocrisy. No we won’t say that. But we
can only say that, until we learn to be bold, firm, consistent,
cognitively fit, we will constantly be taken for granted by our leaders
especially those in the Executive. How can we use tax payers money on a
beautiful project and leave it in the ‘bush’. If we indeed believe in
Democracy and Political Sovereignty, as we have exhibited in the past
days, then we should direct our oversight responsibility mainly on the
Executive. Public Sector workers in the district are facing
accommodation challenges which include:
1. Exorbitant rent charges/advances.
2. Unexpected ejections by some unlawful landlords.
3. Indecent accommodation (lacking proper routine maintenance). Some becoming death traps for workers.
Speaking to ghanajustice.com in an interview in Parliament, Hon. Samuel
Atta Akyea, Minister for Works and Housing stated that workers in the
various constituencies will have the benefit of high rise structures,
with affordable prices, then why don’t we finish with what has been
started already to be habitable?
We hope President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo will consider our plea by
ensuring that the Ministry for Works and Housing do needful by making
the Saglemi Housing Units habitable for workers in the country.
Mr. Joseph N. K. Teye.
