Former Deputy Communications Minister under the erstwhile Mahama administration, Edward Ato Sarpong has criticised the Akufo-Addo-led administration for what he describes as huge expenditure at the seat of the president.
Speaking on Dwaboase on Power 97.9 FM Monday, Mr Sarpong said the president, who criticised the Mahama government for corruption and overspending, has succeeded in beating the yearly expenditure of the previous government in nine months, saying Ghana spends GH₵ 22,800 [an equivalent of $4000] on the president per hour.
His comment comes after the Minority in Parliament revealed that the President’s office expended GH₵1.9 million on refreshments and expended GH₵62 million on foreign travels in 9 months from the annual GH₵3.4 billion approved by parliament in 2019. Some GHC5.85 million was also spent on hotel accommodation within same period.
But Mr Sarpong, who believes the expenditure is outrageous for a developing country as Ghana, said president Akufo-Addo has proven to be irresponsible when it comes to managing the country’s resources.
He said his perusal of the documents presented to Parliament as part of budget estimates for the office of government machinery for the 3rd quarter of the year indicate that the president uses approximately 450 gallons of fuel everyday.
“We spend $4,400 every hour on president Akufo-Addo…This is closer to what America spends on President Trump an hour. And this is Ghana
” he said.
Mr Sarpong said the expenditure line item on travels means the president uses 450 gallons of fuel each day.
“This is outrageous because if he [Akufo-Addo] were to commute from Tamale to his office in Accra on daily basis we would not be spending that much on fuel because almost all the time he is in his office,” he added saying the Akufo-Addo government is misusing state resources.
To him, the Mahama government never misused state funds like the oppulence the Akufo-Addo administration is showing under the guise of governing.
“If you check the 4 year spending of our government at the seat of the president, it was around 1.5 billion but the estimate budgeted for the presidency under H.E Akufo-Addo for his four year term is about 9 billion,” he added “Ghana has no future under the NPP.”
