Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti region, Bernard Antwi Boasiako a.k.a Chairman Wontumi has called yesterday’s march by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kumasi as a total failure that eventually went to his benefit, MyNewsGh.com reports.
He says per his estimate, only 700 people showed up for the demonstration against the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to compile a new voters register for the 2020 elections, because he “as a governor”, I followed the march closely and can confidently say that the numbers were disappointing.
Wontumi says he employed people to do a head count of the demonstrators and he was briefed of the numbers at every step of the walk; “I won’t even call it a demonstration, it was a keep fit exercise; now I have benefitted because I have been able to mafia them to put a stop to all future demonstrations”.
The organizers of the protest however, say the numbers exceeded their expectations, given the fact that it was staged in the ruling party’s stronghold; newspapers, online portals and other media outlets also reported of a massive turnout in thousands.
The inter party resistance against new voters register has announced a temporary suspension of their demonstrations which was intended to be held across the country, pending the advice of the Committee of Eminent Persons constituted by the EC over the new register.
But Wontumi says the suspension is because they have been shamed; he challenged the NDC to allow the EC to do its work and rather focus on compiling its manifesto and choosing its running mate for the 2020 presidential elections.
He spoke at a press conference organized by the Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) in Kumasi on Wednesday, covered by MyNewsGh.com.
